What to Expect on Your First Visit
Let's be honest – booking your first massage involves a level of vulnerability that can feel intimidating. You're entrusting your body to someone you've never met, in a space you've never been, behind closed doors. We completely get why that might make you hesitate.
At MASAJ, we deeply understand these barriers and we're committed to addressing them head-on. Every body is welcome here – and we mean every body.
Here's everything you're probably wondering but were too embarrassed to ask.
First Time? Let's Clear Up the Weird Stuff
"Do I have to get naked?"
The underwear question. Classic.
We always suggest down to lower underwear or whatever you are comfortable with. We just need access to the parts we will be working on. We can work around or over the back of binders when needed - avoiding oil in this area. We might ask you to pop your arms out of bra straps to access shoulders. Glute and chest-work can be done through sheets if preferred and you’ll be asked your preference.
Your therapist will leave the room while you undress to whatever level works for you, and you'll be properly covered with a sheet or towel throughout.
And no, we don't care if you haven't shaved your legs. Or anywhere else. Bodies have hair. It's what they do.
"What if I fall asleep and snore? Or drool?"
Good. That means we're doing our job right.
Falling asleep is a massive compliment to your therapist. It means your nervous system is releasing all those happy hormones and you're properly relaxed. Snore away. Drool? We've seen it all. We'll gently wake you when we're done – and don't worry about jumping up right away. Take your time coming back to reality.
"What if I need to wee halfway through?"
Then you get up and wee.
Just say the word and we'll pause. Seriously, holding it in is the opposite of relaxation, and this is all about you feeling good. We'll step out, you do what you need to do, and we'll pick up where we left off.
"Can I talk during the massage or should I be quiet?"
It's your hour.
Some people chat the whole time. Others don't say a word. Both are completely fine. The only thing we absolutely need to hear from you is if something hurts or doesn't feel right. Otherwise, you do you.
"What if I'm on my period?"
Come anyway.
Periods don't bother us, and massage can actually help with cramps. Just let your therapist know so they can adjust pressure in certain areas. Wear whatever makes you feel secure, and remember – we work with bodies all day, every day. Nothing surprises us.
"Can I choose who touches me?"
Absolutely.
If you prefer a male or female-identifying, or gender non-conforming therapist, just say so when you book. We get it – it matters who puts their hands on your body, and we want you to feel 100% comfortable. You can check out our team page first to see who you might connect with, or email / call us to get advice on who might be a good fit. Please note, that if you make a booking online without selecting a Therapist preference, you'll need to give us 48 hours notice if you want to make any changes to your booking - it's best to do this by emailing or calling our team.
"Do I need to shower before I come?"
Normal levels of human cleanliness are fine.
We don't expect you to be freshly scrubbed. If you're coming straight from the gym, that's cool too. We've dealt with post-marathon runners – your regular Tuesday body odour doesn't faze us.
What Actually Happens When You Visit
You'll arrive: Our host will greet you warmly, setting the tone for your entire experience. They'll adjust their energy to match (or gently calm) yours. If you seem frazzled after fighting London traffic, we'll bring the peaceful vibes you need.
The welcome: For first-timers, we'll guide you through everything without overwhelming you. What's second nature to us might be completely new to you – and that's okay. We'll point out the facilities, offer you water or tea, and make sure you're comfortable.
Personalise your experience: We'll introduce you to our MASAJ Slate and Blends Bar, where you can customise your treatment. Choose your preferred aromatherapy scent by lifting the cloche to experience each blend. Can't decide? Just select "MASAJ Choice" and we'll handle it.
Meet your therapist: Your therapist will collect you from the waiting area and bring you to the treatment room. This is where you can ask questions and share concerns during your consultation.
The private part: Your therapist will explain exactly what will happen, then leave the room while you undress to your comfort level and get on the table under the sheet or towel.
The massage happens: They'll check pressure is good. Too deep? Too light? Speak up – this is your time.
It ends: Your therapist will tell you they're finished and step out so you can get dressed at your own pace.
Aftermath: Drink water. Feel wobbly and fantastic. Go about your day with shoulders that aren't living by your ears.
Every Body Welcome
We're serious about welcoming every body. That means regardless of your size, shape, age, gender, or physical condition – you belong here.
Our hosts are trained to be attentive to any specific needs you might have. Please let us know so we can adapt our approach.
What might feel strange or overwhelming to you is something we've helped countless others navigate. You're not the first person to feel nervous, and you certainly won't be the last.
Still Nervous?
That's normal. But remember – we do this all day, every day. The thing you're worried about? We've seen it before. The question you're embarrassed to ask? We've answered it a hundred times.
The only bad massage is the one you talk yourself out of booking because you're worried about the small stuff.
So book the damn massage. Your body's been sending us passive-aggressive emails, and we're ready to help you hit "mark as read" on all that tension.
