Is it safe to have a massage while pregnant?
MASAJ therapist Kelroy Sandy, a specialist in pregnancy and postnatal massage, shares his insights on safety, benefits, and his personalised approach.
Is Massage Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes, pregnancy massage is safe and beneficial when performed correctly, particularly from the second trimester onwards. It can boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and lower stress levels.
However, it’s important to ensure the pregnant person is positioned comfortably, ideally lying on their side (with the left side preferred to support blood flow to the heart, though alternating sides allows equal access for massage). Direct abdominal massage should be avoided, but rest assured, babies are well-protected and safe in the womb.
Is it safe to have a massage in the first trimester?
While there’s no concrete evidence linking massage to increased risk of harming baby or mother, many UK training providers, insurance companies, and regulatory bodies advise against offering massage during this period as a precaution. Consequently, MASAJ does not provide massage treatments during the first trimester. This approach aligns with industry standards and prioritises your safety during these early stages.
It is safe to have a massage from the second and third trimesters though and we’d love to help you.
Benefits of Massage in the Second and Third Trimesters
From week 13 onwards, massage can be a wonderful addition to your prenatal care routine and is safe for both mum and baby. The benefits include:
Reduced Back and Leg Pain
As your body adapts to accommodate your growing baby, additional strain is placed on your muscles and joints. Massage can help alleviate discomfort in these areas.
Improved Circulation

Stress Reduction
Pregnancy can cause increased anxiety and stress. Massage encourages relaxation by boosting serotonin and dopamine levels, contributing to a more balanced mood.
Our Approach to Pregnancy Massage at MASAJ
At MASAJ, we understand the unique needs of expectant mothers. Every person experiences different aches, pains, and discomforts, and our therapists are specifically trained in prenatal massage techniques to ensure each session is both safe and personalised to your individual requirements.
To maximise comfort and safety, we use appropriate positioning and support throughout your treatment. This includes elevating the upper body with cushions to keep the head above the heart, promoting healthy blood flow and reducing the risk of dizziness or faintness. Alternatively, we can position you on your side, with a pillow placed between your thighs for additional support, ensuring a relaxing and effective experience tailored to you.
A word from Kelroy:
“As a therapist, my main objective is to make change in the person I am treating. With that being said pregnancy massages are one treatment that I thoroughly enjoy and I find very rewarding. Being a father of four children I know what it’s like firsthand for my partner to go through pregnancy and stages. I know this is something that can greatly impact the body so any way I could help alleviate pain, tension or stress I will gladly assist. I make it perfectly clear that the treatment space is for them and it’s their time to detach from the world and everything that’s going on to really focus on resetting themselves for the rest of the tasks that lay ahead.”
Postpartum Massage
Beyond pregnancy, we also offer postpartum massage to support your recovery after childbirth. These treatments can help alleviate muscle tension, promote relaxation, and provide a rejuvenating experience as you adjust to life with your new baby.
In Conclusion
While massage is not recommended during the first trimester, it becomes a safe and beneficial practice from the second trimester onwards when performed by qualified professionals. At MASAJ, your health and comfort are paramount. We are here to support you through every step of your pregnancy journey with the healing power of touch.
